I’ve been a knitter for a long time (over 17 years now) and for some reason I was never interested in doing colorwork. I guess it just always seemed very tedious and fiddly? I tried a mitten last year but it’s in hibernation now 🙁
Last summer I was browsing the r/knitting sub on Reddit and came across the Alaska Sweater by Camille Descoteaux. It really caught my eye and I absolutely loved the use of tweed yarn for a snowy effect. I decided to give colorwork another go.
The pattern called for Knit Picks City Tweed DK. Unfortunately, the colorway Tahitian Pearl had been discontinued, and Obsidian was out of stock. It took a while to decide but I went with my gut – when in doubt, pick a favorite color. The color Artichoke is my favorite shade of green, and for the treeline hem and cuffs, I picked Tarantella, a dark reddish-brown.
As I’m new at colorwork, it took some time to get used to the tension. I definitely made the body too tight and had to block the heck out of it. The cuffs got better as I progressed. The tree pattern is super cute and I have gotten so many compliments on the sweater. It was also my first time using a tweed yarn, and the City Tweed DK did not disappoint!
I finished the sweater before Christmas and wore it for the first time today. It was very warm and cozy! I’m glad I opted for the longer fit because the cropped fit just would not work for my long torso.
I’m super happy with how it turned out. Looking forward to more wintery days so I can show off my sweater 🙂
